Advantages and disadvantages of teleworking

Teleworking has experienced a significant boom in recent years, driven by technological advances and the search for a better work-life balance. Undoubtedly, this modality of work offers several advantages, although it also presents some challenges that must be considered. That is why in this article we will analyze the advantages and disadvantages of teleworking, in order to have all the information before opting for this way of working. We will also explain the origin of teleworking, which many of us do not know.

The "father" of telework

The first person to talk about telecommuting and, in fact, to coin the term in English(telecommuting) was the American physicist Jack Nilles who, in the early 1970s, was working on a project to apply aerospace technology to the real world and came up with the idea of using it to solve the problem of traffic, which was already chaotic in some U.S. cities at the time.

Obviously, there was no Internet or personal computers, so his idea was to "bring work closer to the workers", creating offices close to where the employees lived, so that they did not have to use the car to go to work. He even implemented his project in an insurance company, which tested it for 9 months, with very good results. But despite the success, the company's management decided not to continue with remote workplaces. The company was not yet ready for the new work model.

And, in fact, it took 50 years for Jack Nilles to see his ideas put into practice, when the Covid-19 pandemic forced the whole world to telework.

Advantages of teleworking

Compared to face-to-face work, teleworking offers several advantages, such as:

  1. Flexibility: Telecommuting allows employees to manage their own time and better reconcile their work and personal lives, improving their well-being and job satisfaction.
  2. Cost savings: For both companies and employees, teleworking can lead to significant cost savings - companies reduce expenses associated with office infrastructure (rents, supplies, other operating costs...) and employees save on transportation, food...
  3. Increased productivity and efficiency: By eliminating the daily commute to work, employees gain time they can devote to work. In addition, teleworking reduces distractions and interruptions typical of offices, favoring concentration and individual efficiency.
  4. Reduced environmental impact: By reducing daily commuting, teleworking contributes to the reduction of environmental pollution and CO2 emissions, benefiting the environment.
  5. Access to global talent: Companies that opt for telecommuting can expand their talent search to a global market, without being limited by geographic constraints. This allows them to find the best candidates for each position, regardless of location.

Disadvantages of teleworking

Compared to face-to-face work, teleworking also presents challenges that must be taken into account:

  1. Connectivity dependency: Teleworking requires a stable and high-speed internet connection to work well. And this can be a problem in areas with poor coverage or for those who do not have a good internet connection.
  2. Adaptation to new technologies: For some employees, the use of new technological tools and online communication platforms can be a barrier and require additional training.
  3. Need for an adequate workspace: An ergonomic and distraction-free workspace is essential for productive work at home. However, not all employees have adequate space at home.
  4. Isolation: Telecommuting can lead to feelings of isolation and social disconnection, especially for those who enjoy the collaborative environment of an office and interacting with colleagues.
  5. Communication difficulties: Remote communication can present additional challenges, such as lack of body language, potential misunderstandings, and the need for more proactive and structured communication.
  6. Difficulties disconnecting: The line between work and personal life can blur in telecommuting, which can lead to difficulties disconnecting and setting clear boundaries. This can generate stress and affect the worker's overall well-being.

The importance of a good technological solution for effective teleworking

As we have seen, teleworking has advantages and disadvantages, which must be evaluated by companies and employees. But for it to be successful, it is essential to establish clear communication and collaboration policies, foster a culture of remote work that values work-life balance and, most importantly, have the right technological tools so that it can be carried out with the necessary quality and efficiency.
